What kind of game is this?

DragonSword: Awakening is an open-world action RPG built in Unreal Engine 5 with a hand-drawn anime aesthetic. You play as Lute, a young adventurer who inherits the power of the Dragon Sword, exploring the continent of Orbis. Combat is real-time and character-action focused β€” think dodges, counters, aerial combos and a deep status-effect system rather than button-mashing.

It is a premium, buy-to-play title (not a gacha). You own the game outright; heroes are unlocked through play, not random pulls.

Master the tag-team system first

The single most important mechanic to internalize early is tagging. You field a party and swap between heroes mid-combat. Swapping is not just for healing or variety β€” it is the engine of your damage. A well-timed tag can:

  • Extend a combo by continuing the enemy's stagger state with a fresh character.
  • Trigger a Signal Skill β€” a powerful follow-up that only fires when you tag in under the right conditions (see our Signal Skills guide).
  • Hand off a status ailment so the next hero can detonate or amplify it.
TipDon't treat tags as an "oh no, I'm low" panic button. Plan your swaps the way you plan your combos.

Understand status ailments before you build a team

Enemies can be afflicted with nine status ailments β€” Burn, Bleed, Stun, Shock, Chill, Airborne, Knockdown, Break and more. Certain heroes deal massive bonus damage or trigger unique effects against specific ailments. Building a team that chains ailments together (a "relay") is far stronger than stacking raw damage. Read the Status Relay guide and try combinations in the Team Builder.

Progression priorities

  1. Main story β€” unlocks regions, heroes and core systems. Follow it first.
  2. Hero levels & gear β€” keep your active trio upgraded; don't spread resources across all 19 heroes at once.
  3. Familiars β€” companion creatures that grant passive bonuses. Equip them once unlocked (see the Familiars guide).
  4. Cooking β€” consumable buffs for tough fights. Cheap and easy to overlook (see the Cooking guide).

Common early mistakes

  • Ignoring the dodge. Many attacks are unblockable but telegraphed β€” dodge, don't tank.
  • Upgrading everyone equally. Focus resources on a core team of 3–4.
  • Skipping side content. The open world hides materials, chests and lore that accelerate progression.
  • Not experimenting with relays. The status system rewards creativity β€” try odd team comps.
VerificationSpecific numbers (damage multipliers, resource costs) are being captured from the release build and will be added as they are confirmed. The mechanics described here are drawn from official demonstrations and the live game.
